Bobby Carter | February 1, 2017 — We all love a good redemption story: We're front and center to watch our heroes get knocked down, and then we cheer for them to triumphantly rebound. What we're witnessing with Shelly Massenburg-Smith — a.k.a. D.R.A.M. — is the culmination of a story marked by resilience and stubborn strength. Making a hit record in the music industry is extremely difficult, and in 2015, D.R.A.M.'s debut single "Cha Cha" was on the brink of exploding. It was getting played in clubs across the country and bubbling on the charts; the Beyhive even got a hold of it. Then Drake's "Hotline Bling" happened. The reports are conflicting as to the inspiration for the record, but there are glaring similarities in the sound of each. "Hotline Bling" was even originally billed as the "Cha Cha" remix by Beats 1, where the song made its debut. Needless to say, "Hotline Bling" practically swallowed "Cha Cha," but D.R.A.M. didn't whine about it. He addressed it and went back to the drawing board, crafting another smash. "Broccoli" became one of 2016's biggest hits while setting up the release of his debut album, Big Baby D.R.A.M. We recently invited D.R.A.M. to NPR to lend us his jovial spirit and brighten our workday; after all, his primary aim is to spread love through music. He was jarred by the Tiny Desk setting for a moment before the cameras started rolling. He's accustomed to touching every corner of the stage, but like a pro, he walked to the desk, activated his signature smile and bounced through various highlights from his catalog. D.R.A.M., whose name stands for Does Real Ass Music, wrote his first selection, "Cash Machine," right after he'd received his first big music check. Don't you know that I got that bag And best believe my mama straight I sent some bands to Tatiana And if I brought you out I'll pay your way What twentysomething doesn't feel this way once they step into some money? The crowd beamed more with each performance, leading up to a climactic rendition of "Broccoli." The energy is all fun and games, but his talent is no joke: "Broccoli" is nominated for a Grammy this year, right alongside "Hotline Bling." A victory would provide a fitting end to this chapter of D.R.A.M.'s career, but regardless of the outcome, he's already victorious: Far removed from the "Hotline Bling" shadow, he's already creating bigger songs and more memorable moments, like this one at the Tiny Desk. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Bobby Carter | April 26, 2021 When D.R.A.M. played the Tiny Desk back in 2017, he made a couple of things clear to us: His playfully dynamic personality was primed for the spotlight, and beneath the catchy hooks, there's a real singer waiting to come out. For his Tiny Desk (home) concert, he does a complete 180. "It's like a new beginning. Full circle. So this time, call me Shelley." he says, following the opening track, "Exposure." Everything is new. Silk pajamas and slippers replace the trench coat and plush beanie, and thanks to lifestyle changes, he's slimmed down quite a bit and goes by his government name now: Shelley. The shift from lighthearted melodic hip-hop to full-on R&B crooner shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's seen him perform live. It feels like it's his way of saying, "Now that I have your attention, allow me to introduce myself." We still get glimpses of the "Big Baby" here and there — the charm, a little bit of silliness, and the million-dollar grin — but other than that, it's grown folks business and vocally flawless performance. For the Shelley Show, he gathers a groovy band in front of a massive bookshelf and runs through selections, including the premiere of "Rich & Famous" from his upcoming self-titled project, due out on April 29, his late mother's birthday. If D.R.A.M. was the ploy to break into the music industry, then Shelley is the longevity play. NO drum replacement was done in this mix, this is a 100% acoustically recorded and mixed track: absolutely no supplementation, layering, or triggering was done. This song has been on my wish-list for a cover pretty much since the first time I heard it. The only thing that always held me back, though, was the double-bass madness. It's not incredibly fast or complicated, but I absolutely never practice single-strokes on the kick, which is why I am sincerely not good at that, at all. I do some bursts and patterns using heel-toe (which is the main reason I started playing double-bass in the first place) but I never practice straight up consistent single strokes. Here's the crazy part: the BPM of this song is such that it was JUST fast enough to be out of my comfortable range when I used single strokes (I'd hold it consistently for about 5 seconds, then I would just tense up and look supremely spastic) but also JUST slow enough to my out of my comfortable range when using heel-toe. What the flip?! So I practiced it for a week or two, spending time every day trying to get my singles faster, as well as getting my doubles SLOWER.. which is a weird concept, but I had to be able to control the slower speed when playing doubles. After a lot of practicing, the heel-toe control improved before the single stroke speed did, so I opted for heel-toe.. much to the dismay of my shins. Most 16th note kick patterns you hear in this cover was played using heel-toe, except for a few quick bursts of single strokes here and there. All extended 16th note segments were done using heel-toe (after which my shins caught fire). All of that said: playing along to a hard rock track is fun beyond measure. Minimal ghost notes, just straight up power and drive. LOVE IT. Also: this is the only track in The Quadrum Series (and my first cover EVER!) where I used a different snare drum than the other songs in the series. My main snare was tuned quite high and responsive for the other tracks, but I wanted a more beefy tone for this song. The snare that I used is Neil Peart's personal Snakes & Arrows from right here at Drum Channel. I've used this snare in many places (on 8 of the 11 songs on my Ventura Lights' debut album, Way Up Here) and I absolutely love it. Please consider supporting me on Patreon! - 🤍
