Leg swelling and fatigue can happen in your legs for many reasons. These easy treatments may help reduce swelling or even prevent it from happening. They may also help prevent leg fatigue. Swelling in the feet and ankles can be from a number of things. Often it is from an injury, but it can be an injury at your foot, ankle, knee, hip, or even back since the fluid or swelling will often follow gravity. More ankle stretches: 🤍 SUPPORT me on Patreon for as little as $1 a month, and get cool rewards: 🤍 If you have not had an injury to your feet and/or ankles, and you are having swelling, make sure you check in with your doctor because it could be a symptom of a more serious issue. Ankle pumps, calf stretches, and straight leg raises (SLR) are great ways to help reduce swelling in your feet and ankles. Working the calf, quads, and hip flexors work as natural pumps to move the fluid out of your legs. Also, propping your leg up above your heart and just relaxing can help reduce the swelling as well. Some seated exercises like seated hip flexion, seated long arc quads (LAQ), and heel and toe raises are great to do if you have to work at a desk all day. You can also do the heel raises standing for a tougher exercise. This is definitely a problem nowadays because most of the people are sitting for a long duration in the office and they hardly get you and move around and that puts them at a risk of swelling in both their foot but make sure that the swelling which you have got is due to prolonged sitting and not due to anything else. There are other conditions like cardiac problems, renal problems and other problems in their systems which can lead to the swelling. So once you rule out these, then you can think that the swelling is due to prolonged posture. How to deal with that is you have to keep moving your foot up and down as well as moving you knee front and back as much as possible and the problem is with the static sitting how much this compresses the veins so that the blood that is accumulated in the veins cannot go to the heart. So the longer you sit the difficulty is for the blood to the heart. So the blood remains stagnant in the foot. So in the longer run, that puts you in the risk of developing even varicose veins. In order to prevent that is the future, it is recommended for these people that they keep moving their foot and the knee so that the contraction of the muscles will pump blood to the heart. Sitting for more than one hour is really not recommended. So they have to get up, move around, and sit and get up once and twice to pump the blood towards the heart. Thereby the stagnated blood cannot get swelling over there. As a daily protocol, you should have a habit of moving your ankle and the knee every now and then and getting up of a chair and moving around every one hour. So that will really reduce the risk of you developing a swelling over your foot.

After nose surgery it is very common to get swelling and puffiness of the nose. On the outside it looks swollen and on the inside it will look stuffy. There are simple things you can use to treat this. On the outside typically the surgeon needs to put a dressing on top with tapes. Sometimes we may even put with plaster of paris to keep the swelling down. It is good to keep this plaster of paris for a period of 5 to 7 days till the swelling settles down. The next thing you can do is to put some ice packs. Take some ice, put it in a plastic cover, wrap it in a handkerchief and keep it around your nose or the side of your nose keep it anywhere between two to three minutes because beyond this you are going to get very uncomfortable. You can repeat this as many times in a day as you want. Typically we advice people to keep it every 4 hours so that the swelling goes down. The third thing you can do is to prop yourself up. Either sit up or be in a reclined position or when you lie down keep two pillows so that your head is elevated. This will help to bring your swelling down. If there is swelling inside the nose you will get stuffiness and this you can treat very simply by taking steam inhalation. The steam helps to reduce the swelling. There are some saline nasal drops or some medicated drops which are available which the doctor can prescribe which will reduce the swelling of the nose. Finally if it is a very severe swelling the doctor may prescribe some kind of medications typically some enzymatic preparations which will help to reduce the nose swelling. If you do all this the stuffiness and the swelling of the nose will definitely decrease.

To Request an appointment with Dr. Schneider: 🤍 A very common complaint that I see in my Houston podiatry practice is edema, which is swelling of the feet, ankles, and legs. Not all swelling is created equal, however. It's important to identify the cause of the swelling. That will help to determine when it's dangerous, when it's something you can treat at home, and when you need to get it checked. The number one cause of swelling in your feet, ankles or legs is your overall health. Swelling can be caused by heart problems, such as congestive heart failure or previous heart attacks. Lung issues, such as COPD, smoking, and emphysema. These cause a strain on your heart, which becomes less efficient. It can't pump all the fluid through and settles down into your feet. Kidney issues can cause swelling. Long term diabetes and other metabolic issues. You can swell if you're severely overweight because of the extra work your heart has to do to pump the fluid through the body. If you have any of these issues, it's essential that you get them checked by your podiatrist, your internist, or your cardiologist. Another cause of edema is pregnancy. Pregnancy messes with your metabolic system and fluid control. You have to cycle more fluid than you're used to, but your heart is the same size. That will lead to swelling. This is very commonly seen in pregnant women. Especially as the pregnancy progresses. The next cause of edema is a pretty dangerous one. It's called lymphedema. This presents as a harder form of edema. The outer layers of the skin thicken and become scaled. Your legs may resemble tree bark. The lymphatic vessels function to drain the fluid and proteins from surrounding cells and carry them upstream to get them reincorporated back into the bloodstream. If the lymphatic vessels are damaged, it can lead to lymphedema. You can damage lymphatic vessels by being overweight for an extended period of time, skin infections, such as cellulitis, and physical injuries as well. These injuries to the vessels can create the thicker skin and associated swelling. This is different from vein issues that cause swelling. Venous stasis, venous insufficiency, and varicose veins are also causes of swelling of the foot, ankle, and leg. In these cases, the veins work to bring the blood up the leg against gravity. The veins have one way valves that prevent the blood from moving backwards. What can happen, though, is the valves can fail, causing the blood to leak back down the leg. The swelling from venous issues is different from lymphedema. Lymphedema causes a hard, brawny type of swelling. Venous issues cause a type of edema. Pitting edema gets its name for the indentation that is left. When you press on the area of swelling. it's almost like putting your finger into putty. One great home remedy that can be used for edema caused by venous issues is using a pneumatic pump. These are boots that you put on when your feet are propped up. They progressively compress, from your feet to your ankles and up your leg. These pneumatic boots do a great job managing edema. There are some consumer units, but I find the medical grade ones work a bit better. Some medication can cause swelling in the lower extremity. This is particularly true for heart and blood pressure medication. It's a known side effect of the medication, to the point where it's formulated with a diuretic in the medication already to help offset the known swelling. A blood clot can form in the calf. It's called Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If your calf becomes red, hot, and swollen, it may be a DVT. A DVT is a medical emergency. It's important to go to the emergency room and you'll likely be admitted into the hospital. The test that you get is a venous doppler, which is a non-invasive test to look for a blood clot in the vein. The reason it's important to identify and treat a DVT is that can dislodge travel up the vein and become a pulmonary embolism. That will affect your breathing and is a life-threatening issue. There are musculoskeletal issues that also cause edema. Wearing an unsupported shoe when you exercise can cause the muscles and tendons to work too hard. This can cause them to swell and lead to edema. Mobilizing the muscles is helpful to prevent or treat edema caused by musculoskeletal issues. Stretch your calf, your thighs, and your hamstrings. Anti-inflammatory medication may help edema caused by musculoskeletal issues, but not so much swelling caused by other causes. These bones are responsible for balance, and support of the body’s weight through many activities, such as walking, running, standing, and jumping. • Swollen ankles and swollen feet are common and usually not a cause for concern, particularly in cases of minor injury. • However, ankles and feet that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could be signs of a serious underlying health problem that requires prompt medical attention. CAUSES Here are some of the reasons why a person’s ankle and feet may appear swollen: • Trauma to the ankle or foot. The most common is a sprained ankle • Pregnancy. This swelling is due to increased pressure on the veins and fluid retention • Preeclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication in which high blood pressure and protein develop after the 20th week of pregnancy or immediately after birth. • Edema • Alcohol • Venous insufficiency, a condition in which blood inadequately moves up from the legs and feet up to the heart. • Infection. People with diabetic neuropathy and other nerve problem of the feet have an increased risk of infection affecting their feet • Blood clots • Lymphedema, a condition in which lymphatic fluid gathers in the tissues as a result of problems with the lymph vessels. • Heart disease or heart failure • Kidney disease • Liver disease such as cirrhosis • Lifestyle factors such as wearing ill-fitting shoes, having a sedentary life, walking or standing for long periods • Obesity • Certain medications including antidepressants, steroids, medications to help manage diabetes, birth control pills, calcium-channel blockers that help control blood pressure. • Nutritional deficiencies • Bone and tendon conditions • Hormonal imbalance Seek immediate medical attention if swollen ankle and feet is accompanied by chest pain, a pressure in the chest, shortness of breath, severe headache, upper abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting or fever SYMPTOMS Symptoms depend on the underlying causes and may range from: • Painless increase in foot and ankles size • Redness of skin around the swollen area • Warm skin around the swollen area • Ulceration with pus drainage • Achy legs It is of great importance not to ignore any type of swelling. The European Society of Cardiology in a 2015 report stated that one in five people will develop heart disease, but most don’t know that the first two symptoms of heart failure are swelling, starting at the feet and moving up through the ankles.
